Proverb: Akimuhana Kaza Imvura Ihise

This Kinyarwanda proverb highlights the importance of self-reliance and warns against depending entirely on others for your needs. It teaches us that relying on outside support can often result in delays or unmet expectations, and it encourages people to take initiative and do their best to fulfill their own responsibilities.

The proverb originates from a story involving King Yuhi Gahindiro of Rwanda. Children living in his household once stole crops from others because he did not grow those particular crops himself. However, when they returned, they could not cook the stolen food because rain had extinguished the fire and wood would not catch the fire. Observing this, the king decided to start growing those crops in his own fields. This ensured the children could access the crops whenever needed, without relying on outside help.

The king’s actions demonstrate the core message of the proverb: by taking ownership and providing for yourself, you can avoid unnecessary dependence and ensure your needs are met.
